Design is half of my craft; selling it is the other.

As a designer, I've been trained to create high quality works. To kern appropriately, use colour responsibly, and layout masterfully. Yet, my experience of working in the world of clients and digital design has taught me that these skills count for little if I can't sell the final product.

Bridging the gap between design and development

So a while ago, I sat back and looked at the process we had. The main issue seemed to stem from a communications thing, but looking deeper it was more so the barrier between Design and Development. So I plucked it apart and found out the issues, these are listed below.

How An App Designer Stays Sharp

Working as a UI/UX designer 9-5, five days a week, you might assume I would have ample time in which to practice my craft. I've found, though, that all this does is keep me steady and complacent as an app designer.

As such, I'm not developing my skills so much as repeating that which I can already do. A project comes in, and in a short stretch of time, it needs to be designed and sent out for build. Because of this, I have little time in my working week to learn, get truly creative and improve my personal skill set.

The Do's and Don'ts of Iconography in digital design

ON YOUR MARKS

For a quick introduction, I'm a UI/UX and mobile app designer based in Newcastle. Icons are everywhere, literally. On the door to the toilet at work, the packaging on your sandwiches, right across to those found in abundance on your phone. Over the countless number of years I have been designing, I have been subjected to both good and damnable icons and symbolism. However, through working within design agencies, I have seen patterns emerge.

Why Attentive Design is a Crucial Element When Creating Good Apps

App designers understand that attentive design is important, but sometimes we forget just how important it is. With people using a multitude of apps throughout their daily lives to complete various tasks, ensuring that they flow, respond and react seamlessly is more important than ever. The way the app looks and feels is also important. Today's devices allow app designers to create more visually appealing apps which help attract users. They also allow for limitless potential of extremely usable interfaces. However, with these possibilities also come challenges.

What travelling taught me about Design

Travelling is something I feel allows you to escape from everyday life and immerse yourself in completely new cultures. This opinion of mine was somewhat tainted when I landed in Vietnam to find my tuk tuk driver taking a selfie on his iPhone.

Whilst traveling you come across a wide range of interfaces that are all necessary in helping you complete tasks such as; getting from A to B, finding places to stay, getting cash out and finding things to do. As you can imagine, not all of these interfaces are the most enjoyable things to interact with.

Whilst I was in Bangkok I had a couple of free days so I emailed a local designer by the name of Jérémie Tisseau about the UX community and whether there were any meet ups that I could pop along to. The reply I got basically said, ‘UX hasn’t made its way over here yet, I’m trying to change that though.’
